Day 6: The Life We Want Begins with the Choices We Make
Updated: Aug 18
Hello, friends.
During my summer holidays, I have created a little morning ritual that has become a very important moment in my day.
The house is peacefully quiet. My husband has already left for work, my teenagers are still asleep, and I walk out to my garden and sit beneath my tree. I breathe, take in the beauty of nature around me, and for a little while, I reconnect with myself before the world begins asking anything of me.
This morning, as I sat there, I found myself thinking about one of the greatest lessons I have learned in recent years:
Many of the patterns I had been living were created by me! (I was so shocked when I first learned this.)
Not everything that happened in my life, of course. Life brought experiences that I never would have chosen, and many of them were completely beyond my control.
But my thoughts…
The words I repeated to myself…
The fears I carried…
The stories I believed…
The habits I had created…
Those were quietly shaping the way I was living.
Accepting that was not easy. In fact, it is a lesson that I am still working on—and sincerely, I think I will work on it for the rest of my life!
Our brains become familiar with the thoughts we repeat most often. With time, those thoughts can become patterns, and those patterns can influence how we see ourselves, other people, and the world around us.
The good news is that patterns are not permanent!!
When we become aware of the stories we keep telling ourselves, something begins to change. We start to recognize the thoughts and patterns that may no longer be helping us, and little by little, we can choose differently.
I started noticing my thoughts more carefully, the words I used, the habits I had created, and how I responded when life did not go the way I hoped.
Slowly, those small changes began leading me in a different direction.
While thinking about it during my reflection, I heard my father’s voice in my heart.
He used to say:
“Não tem nada mais importante que o hoje. Hoje é um presente de Deus. Então, faça hoje o seu melhor dia.”
“There is nothing more important than today. Today is a gift. So make today your best day.”
When I was younger, I thought he was simply reminding me to enjoy life.
Today, I understand his words differently.
Every new day gives us another opportunity. We may not be able to choose everything that happens around us, but the life we want can be shaped, little by little, by the small choices that are ours to make each day.
The thoughts we choose to nurture.
The words we choose to speak.
The kindness we choose to offer.
The boundaries we choose to honour.
The courage to begin again when yesterday did not go as we hoped.
Perhaps that is what beginning again really means.
Not waiting for life to become perfect.
Not pretending that everything is within our control.
Recognizing what is ours to choose and, little by little, creating the life we long for.
Because each morning we open our eyes, we have already achieved a victory.

Before We Meet Again Tomorrow…
Tomorrow morning, before the world begins asking anything of you, take one quiet breath and gently ask yourself:
“What choices will help me become the person I want to be today?”
There is no need to change everything. Just choose one small thing. Begin there.
The life we long for begins, little by little, with the choices we make today.
Thank you for walking this journey with me.
With love,
Karem
